Norton High School seniors receive awards for student excellence

 

On Thursday, Nov. 10, Norton Public Schools recognized four exemplary students for their leadership, academics, and service to the surrounding community. The Academic Growth and Student Leadership Award, Superintendent's Award for Excellence, and MA Association of School Superintendents Academic Excellence Award were presented at a School Committee meeting held in the Norton Middle School Library.

Recipients of the Academic Growth and Student Leadership Award must be a high school senior who exemplifies admirable character and accomplishment. Eligible students are personally selected for this award by their principal, high school staff, and superintendent, who choose the students they feel have achieved high all-around distinction in their high school years.

Recipients of the Superintendent's Award for Excellence and the MA Association of School Superintendents Award must be a high school student with a three-year cumulative average, ranking high in their class, who has been actively involved in their community. Eligible students are personally selected for each award by their principal, high school staff, and superintendent, who then choose the student they feel has given exemplary service to their community and has achieved high all-around distinction in their high school career.

 

The 2022 recipients of the Academic Growth and Student Leadership Award are:
 

Tyler Bruno

Tyler Bruno is in the process of completing a highly rigorous program and has taken a multitude of Honors and AP courses. He has been able to maintain a 4.6 GPA and is a member of the History, English, Science, and National Honor Societies. He is also the president of the History Honors Society. Tyler was the 2022 recipient of the Presidential Award for Computer Science. Tyler showed his drive and academic excellence when he decided to take the AP Calculus BC exam and to work outside of school to learn the additional material because Norton only offers AP Calculus AB. Teachers and the IT department describe Tyler as highly intelligent, dedicated, driven, responsible, mature and thoughtful. In addition to his academic achievements, Tyler was two-time captain of the Cross Country team and one time captain of the Indoor Track and Field, and Outdoor Track teams. Tyler is a member of DECA and the NPS Technology Team. He placed 8th at the State DECA competition in March 2022 for an innovation plan project.

Brooke Dennett

Not only is Brooke Dennett a stand-out student, she is also one of the most recognizable leaders at Norton High School. She has an outstanding academic record and has dedicated her time towards being involved in our community. She is a member of multiple Honor Societies and holds leadership positions in three of them. Brooke is President of the Class of 2023 and is Vice President of DECA. Through her plethora of leadership opportunities, she has gained experience running meetings, organizing fundraisers, and planning events. She is also a three-season athlete and is a Varsity runner on both the track and cross country teams. She is excited to study Physical Therapy, hoping to combine her academic interests with her athletic experience. Brooke will surely become a staple of her college environment and will make her mark both in the classroom and in her community as she has done here.

The 2022 recipient of the Superintendent's Award for Excellence is:
 

Julia Hinckley

Julia Hinckley has consistently been dedicated to her academics while balancing her extracurriculars and has maintained a fantastic performance in her classes. Her enthusiasm for learning is apparent and she is towards the top of the class of 2023. Julia is the type of student who goes above and beyond graduation requirements; she has taken 7 science courses and has even shadowed a physician's assistant on her own time which only solidified her interest in this career path. She is a member of 6 Honor Societies, being on the board of two of them, and is also involved in DECA and the Environmental Club. Julia has been involved in dance for 16 years and has enjoyed teaching dance for Pre-k students in addition to her part time job. Julia has been able to fully commit to her academic interests with all of her other responsibilities and will surely find success in her future undergraduate program.

The 2022 recipient of the MA Association of School Superintendents Academic Excellence Award is:
 

Sandra Fairbairn

Throughout her time in high school, Sandra Fairbairn has maintained an exemplary academic record. Through her determination, and dedication she has earned her spot at the top of her class! She has maintained high honors and has been recognized for her academic achievements. Sandra is a proud member of 5 Honor Societies, and even holds a leadership position in one of them. These academic accolades are a true testament to her academic effort, and she is excited to take the next step in her education and is excited to explore computer science or engineering. Sandra has been involved in softball for many years, both on a club team and at Norton High School. Through the sport, she has gained leadership skills and has been recognized as a Tri-Valley League Allstar, Sun Chronicle Allstar, and an NHS team and offensive MVP. She has coached younger athletes both within the town and her club team and sees herself continuing to coach. Sandra is hoping to play softball in college and will certainly be an asset to her school both in and out of the classroom.
