Superintendent’s Message

As October comes to a close, there is so much to celebrate and be excited about across NPS! It has been a busy month filled with learning, celebrations, and opportunities to recognize the wonderful things happening in our schools.

Earlier this month, our elementary schools welcomed families for parent-teacher conferences. These conversations are such an important part of the partnership between home and school, providing an opportunity to celebrate student growth, discuss progress, and work together to support each child's success. Thank you to our families for taking the time to connect with teachers and to our staff for their continued commitment to our students.

Our educators also began their Personalized Learning Pathways during our October professional development day. This year, staff have opportunities to engage in professional learning that aligns with their interests, roles, and the needs of our students. Pathways include artificial intelligence in education, behavioral intervention strategies, strengthening math instruction, implementing new curriculum materials, supporting student mental health, and using data to inform instruction, among others. I am excited about this approach to professional learning and the opportunity it provides for educators across our schools to collaborate, explore new ideas, and bring that learning back to their classrooms.

October also marked the full launch of the Lancer Way across our schools! Over the past several weeks, students have explored what it means to LEAD, ADAPT, NAVIGATE, COMMUNICATE, EMPOWER, and REFLECT. It has been wonderful to see these characteristics come to life in classrooms, hallways, and conversations with students. The Lancer Way is about helping our students develop the skills, confidence, and character they need to be successful, both in school and beyond, and I am excited to see how this work continues to grow throughout the year.

We have also had plenty to celebrate outside of the classroom! Fall athletic teams have been wrapping up their seasons, and senior nights have provided special opportunities to recognize our student-athletes and their families. A huge congratulations to our Norton High School golf team on winning the Division 2 State Championship! What an incredible accomplishment and a wonderful reflection of the hard work, dedication, and teamwork of our student-athletes and coaches. We are so proud of you!

And, of course, today we celebrate Halloween! One of my favorite things about working in schools is seeing students enjoy moments like these. There is something special about watching students arrive in their costumes, share their excitement with friends, and simply enjoy being kids. I hope all of our families have a fun and safe Halloween!

As we head into November, I want to thank our students, staff, and families for all they do to make Norton Public Schools such a special community. There is so much to be proud of, and I look forward to all that is ahead!

JCS and NHS Reading Buddies

The first Reading Buddies gathering of the school year was filled with reading, creativity, and a little Halloween magic! This special collaborative project, led by Special Education Teachers Ms. Patricia Sweeney and Ms. Lisa Ricketts, brings together high school and elementary students to build connections, strengthen relationships, and foster a love of reading across grade levels.

Students enjoyed reading Room on the Broom together before creating their own broomsticks using pretzel sticks and string cheese. It was a wonderful way to bring a story to life while sharing smiles, creativity, and meaningful learning experiences. Thank you to Ms. Sweeney and Ms. Ricketts for creating this opportunity for our students to learn from and connect with one another.

4 Ways Families Can Stay Cybersmart at Home

As Cybersecurity Awareness Month comes to a close, online safety doesn't end at the school doors. Here are four quick, actionable habits your family can put into practice today to keep personal data and home devices secure:

  1. Enable MFA or Passkeys: Add an extra line of defense to your family’s email, banking, and social media accounts. Using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) or passkeys stops the vast majority of unauthorized sign-ins.
  2. Learn to Spot Phishing Red Flags: Talk with your children about suspicious emails, texts, or pop-ups. Look for urgent language, unfamiliar senders, spelling mistakes, and unexpected requests for passwords or personal details.
  3. Establish a Family Tech Station: Charge all devices (chromebooks, tablets, and phones) in a central location, like a kitchen or living room, overnight. This promotes healthier sleep habits and encourages supervised screen time.
  4. Turn On Automatic Updates: Outdated software leaves doors open for security breaches. Ensure automatic updates are enabled on your home Wi-Fi router, smartphones, and personal computers to automatically install critical security patches.

Let's work together to make cyber safety a year-round priority.
